You have strived hard to master the basics of English language and can't wait to advance to the next level.Science can be pretty tough for students who have taken English as their second language. However, the transition to advanced levels can be made smooth by following effective strategies which are easy to implement. It is all the more important while undertaking functional streams like science, history, etc.
Four effective science strategies:
1. Slow approach
If you are having trouble understanding the science terms and terminology, it would be wise to take a slow movement approach. A good case in point is when a language learner visits a native country. He/ she will observe that the native people speak very fast and it may be difficult to comprehend. Hence, a slow speaking or reciting approach will help you with proper pronunciation of science sentences and terminology. You can even note down the important ones for quick reference.
2. Watch videos
If you do not understand a science concept, you can go online and watch explanation videos. By watching videos, you are simultaneously improving your listening as well as English speaking skills. You should preferably listen to videos made by native English speakers. This will help you to get a grasp on accent and pronunciations. It is all right if you don't understand the video at first, pause, rewind and play it again for a better understanding.
3. Visualization power
The human brain has amazing visualization techniques. You can take the help of such imagination while learning important formulas and concepts. You can then recollect them anywhere and anytime. Using the visualizing technique will also enhance your creativity. Through this method you can learn scientific diagrams, analyze info graphics and also build up your visual literacy. This method will help you harness your creative powers for improving your spoken English skills. Wherever possible, use charts and bar diagrams as much as you can. These skills will also help you in your career.
4. Group projects
For people who have English as their second language, it is always preferable to study in groups. It helps in improving your interpersonal and English communication skills. This method also enhances your cooperation and brain storming ideas. All these skills will help you gain advancement in your chosen science career.
All the above four strategies will help you gain good scores in science no matter what your native language. However, consistent practice is the key here for maximum benefits. Practice with a friend or an online English teacher for better guidance.
